Halloween, as an extremely indecisive person, is a hard holiday for me. It practically revolves around questions … What weekend to celebrate? What to wear? How overdone is too overdone? What should my friends and I do because no one’s throwing a party? The list continues …
Among all these questions, picking the right costume is the toughest decision. If you find yourself in the same boat, here’s a straightforward guide to help you navigate the costume conundrum.
This year, many people are leaning towards animal-themed costumes driven by the hot trends of cheetah and leopard print. While these costumes can be cute, they also run you into the risk of unknowingly involving yourself in a group costume with 100 other people; especially if everyone opts for the same Urban Outfitters corset and Amazon mini skirt.
An alternative costume, to the traditional animal-themed costumes, could be the Pink Panther, inspired by the classic cartoon. This costume still takes on the same animal-esque path, while allowing for a bit more creativity. A pink skirt and top paired with pink panther-like ears makes for a unique choice that is less likely to be replicated. If someone does not immediately understand the reference, it is a perfect conversation starter.
When warned that her costume may not stand out this year, Liv Page (11) confirmed that she was perfectly fine with that.
“I think there’s a side of accidentally matching with someone that’s really sweet and can form an unspoken friendship between the two, especially at a party,” Page said.
Among the countless options available, a princess costume never seems to go out of style. Almost every girl dreams of being a princess at least once in their life, and with a few accessories like a tiara and gloves, you can easily bring that fantasy to life.
Fortunately, Halloween costume inspiration is probably one of the easiest things to find. Platforms such as Pinterest and TikTok fill explore pages with creative ideas starting as early as September. Ultimately, this makes the daunting task of choosing a costume more manageable for indecisive teenagers.
Besides the actual “what-to-be” part of the costume, assembling the outfit can also be a challenge — especially if you plan on going out multiple nights. The cost can add up quickly, so investing in versatile pieces that can be reused for different costumes is a clever strategy. A few inexpensive accessories from a thrift store or Amazon can tie together your costume perfectly.
“I was actually able to throw together pieces from my closet for my costume this year, with the exception of buying a few accessories to tie the outfit together,” Taylor Faassen (11) said.
The other half of the debate regarding Halloween this year is what weekend to celebrate. The best answer? Both! Extending the best and most festive holiday of the year not only enhances the fun but also eliminates some of the horrors of choosing just one perfect costume.
No matter what costume you pick this year, Halloween offers endless opportunities for enjoyment. And if all else fails, passing out candy to little kids is always a rewarding option too.
“I love Halloween because it allows me to express my creativity in so many different ways,” Faassen said.
