The prom dance theme this year is “Night at the Museum,” and will be held at the San Diego Natural History Museum on April 18. ASB Junior Class Officer President Cruz Acers (11) assisted in planning the dance.
How did you choose the prom theme for this year and what inspired it?
“We chose the prom theme based on the venue location as well as what we thought would be fun. The theme was inspired by other high school proms.”
How do you decide on music/decorations?
“For decorations, we rent them from the venue we are holding it at. For music, we have hired a DJ that is approved by the district who we also personally like and enjoy.”
How is prom going to be different from last year?
“I think every year’s prom is different just because we have a new venue for this year as well as every graduating class has a distinct vibe associated with them. They choose how to enjoy their prom and celebrate in a different way from previous years.”
What should people wear to match the theme?
“To match the theme, we want people to wear what they would expect to traditionally wear to prom: tuxedos, long dresses and formal attire. People can tailor their outfits with the theme, but it shouldn’t be too big of a factor.”
What type of food will be there?
“For food, we are planning on having a catering service. They will provide rolled tacos, nachos and a churro bar. There will additionally be a mocktail bar.”
What has been the most challenging part of planning prom this year?
“I’d say the most challenging part of planning prom this year has been going in between the different contacts. I have to work with those in the ASB class, our advisor admin, and then the different contractors because it’s a lot of emails.”
What are you most excited for students to experience at prom this year?
“I would say I’m most excited for students to experience the venue this year because I think it is unique. I personally like it because of its significance in the San Diego community and the beauty of the surrounding area.”
Why do you think prom is such an important tradition for high school students?
“I think prom is an important tradition because it allows upperclassmen to further connect with their grades as well as have a fun time that they can associate with school. It allows them to feel more connected with their school.”
How much do tickets cost?
“Tickets are $70 without the Falcon Card. With the Falcon Card, they cost $60.”
What do you hope students remember most about this year’s prom?
“I hope students remember how much they enjoyed spending time with the people around them at prom. As much as I like the venue, DJ and catering, I think that the most significant part of prom is the people you go with and that’s ultimately why we put on prom.”
