As winter approaches and the temperature begins to drop, many reach for cozy essentials to stay warm. Fuzzy boots are a staple for the closet; they pair with outfits and provide comfort during cold days. The brand UGG gained widespread popularity due to their variety in fuzzy boot styles. However, a pair of boots from UGG is very expensive. Dupes are affordable alternatives, but do they really promise the same for a fraction of the cost?

UGGs

UGGs come in a multitude of different styles and colors. The Tasmans, Ultra Minis and multiple slippers are frequently bought and incorporated into today’s fashion. Made with a soft suede, and lined with sheepskin fleece, they offer not only comfort and warmth, but also breathability. 

People continue to buy these boots because of their high quality, allowing them to wear the same pair of UGGs for many winters before having to repurchase new ones. 

Pennie Lesser (10) shared her insights on why she would rather buy from the UGG brand. 

“I would rather buy real UGGs because of their better quality and durability,” Lesser said. “They last longer and are definitely more sustainable. I have owned my ultra-mini boots for about two years, and they are still in perfect condition. The next time I’ll need to buy another pair will probably be in college.” 

Many also splurge on these boots because of their style and feeling. People like to wear name brands because of social influences and trendiness. They also enjoy the comfortability they provide, comparable to a blanket for their feet. 

“I like UGGs because of their authenticity and they also make incredibly cute outfits,” Lesser said. “I realized that once I had my UGGs, I never wanted to take them off, and rarely wore my other pairs of shoes because of how comfortable and stylish they were. They are so easy to slip on and start my day with comfort.”

While many praise UGGs for being fashionable and comfortable, they do have some downsides. Rainy days are specifically the days you want to throw on your warm boots, but UGGs are not water resistant; one drop will permanently stain them unless you buy a special spray, though it may change the shade. 

Helena Cstiski (10) spoke about this problem. 

“I love my slippers, and they are easy to put on and are super fuzzy, perfect for keeping my feet warm when it’s freezing outside,” Cstiski said. “The only problem is that you can’t wear them while it’s raining, or else they will get ruined. That’s the only reason the other brands are better.”

UGGs are expensive, and their lack of water resistance can be unfavorable when compared to other options in lower price ranges. However, they are a solid investment, a trendy pair of boots that are made with high quality materials, lasting for a long time.

Dupes

Lots of other brands create fuzzy boots that look almost identical to UGGs and are budget friendly, costing less than half the price of UGGs. These dupes have grown increasingly popular with those who want the softness and similar look of UGGs without the high price. 

Sara Vora (10) owned UGG alternatives for a few years. 

“I own three pairs of UGG dupes, both boots and slippers,” Vora said. “I like that they are a fraction of the price and they are also comfy, but they get worn out quicker.”

Buying another brand of comfortable boots for less of an amount comes with both benefits and drawbacks. Even though you may have to replace them more often and they are less sustainable, they are cheaper and water resistant.

Ultimately, it comes down to budget. For a longer lasting and higher quality boot, UGGs are the way to go, made with real sheepskin to provide superior warmth, softness and durability. For a similar look and much lower price, UGG dupes are a great choice, already water resistant and still a trendy look.
