With a patio view of the coast, seed-oil-free High Marea came to the Del Mar Plaza in early January. Its light, minimal interior contrasts intricately with the warm and colorful plates of Sonoran cuisine. Every dish is prepared with smoky flavors, local produce and is cooked in beef tallow, allowing locals to enjoy the balance between quality, clean eating and indigenous Mexican flavors.
Magic Bean Mini Burritos – $10

The burritos include three hot and buttery flour tortillas enveloped with soft and juicy shredded pork. The refried pinto beans served alongside the pork are smooth and deliver hints of garlic and onion, creating a simple and flavorful plate. The burritos were pillowy and slightly spicy, and the pulled pork was the perfect hearty addition.

Grilled Fish Tacos – $18

Two grilled fish tacos, paired with a homemade, fire-roasted salsa, are garnished with mild jack cheese, crema slaw, lime-pickled onion and dark green cilantro. The fish is warm and tender, accompanying the vibrant, fresh cabbage and onions. Every bite was soft and warm and tastes like a trip down the coast.

Smoked Arrachera Steak Tacos – $20

The Arrachera Steak brings smoky and rich flavor to the warm, homemade heirloom corn tortillas. Bright cabbage and tangy pickled onions balance out the fresh flavors. Topped with fresh cilantro, a side of spicy salsa verde and a lime wedge, the dish is beautifully presented and full of rich taste.

Smash Burger – $15

High Marea’s Smash Burger is a toasted brioche bun served with a thin smashburger patty. The bun is spread with cured bacon jam, strong cheddar cheese and spicy, piquant chipotle aioli. Besides the burger, crispy French fries are sprinkled with a homemade seasoning blend, with sugar, salt, chili and other spices. The patty is well done, but the burger lacks depth in texture and flavor that typical sides like lettuce and tomatoes usually provide. Additionally, the Chipotle aioli and bacon jam are bold flavors introduced on the burger. They do not complement each other; instead, the condiments are overpowering.
Rating: 4.5/5
High Marea will stand a chance in Del Mar with its lively, aromatic and local flavors. Each plate is different and authentic while keeping a palatable taste. The introduction of a seed-oil-free restaurant will attract many San Diegans who want to try original Sonoran cuisine. The interior is exemplary for a casual lunch or dinner after the beach.
