When the bell rings for lunch, students take advantage of the short time they have to press pause on the school day. However, lunch is also a time for teachers to catch a break. As students try to maximize their enjoyment during lunch, teachers’ lunchtime activities become a bit of a mystery.
John Milner: The classic break
Milner, who teaches Sociology and AP World History, spends his lunches similarly to how a student would.
Wanting to escape the grind of the day, Milner prefers to hang out with his fellow teachers.
“I … like to visit other teachers and eat lunch with them,” Milner said. “Totally take a break from teaching … just hang out with some adults and then get right back to it.”
Who could argue with this kind of lunch? It is the perfect way to spend forty minutes — there is a reason so many students and teachers alike prefer to do it this way.
Alesha Billmeyer: Locked-in prep time
While most of the school is wandering around with friends and talking away, Billmeyer, Intro to Business Management teacher, utilizes her break to focus and power through more work — a classic business/productivity oriented mindset, one might say.
“I love eating while working,” Billmeyer said. “I usually use [lunch] as my prep time, so I grade while eating lunch, and I am more efficient if I’m eating while I do work.”
When it comes to using time wisely, it seems like Billmeyer is a master.
Junior Villegas: The Gracious Giver
Villegas, who teaches Spanish, might spend his time in the most selfless way possible.
“I’m usually in my room during [lunch],” Villegas said. “Hosting club meetings, having students make up tests or reviewing with [them].”
After a long day of school and another full period to power through, most students and teachers like to rest for themselves. But, Villegas’ break is a reminder that the best way to brighten your day is to brighten others’ days.
