At the end of this year’s fall sports season, school teams brought back California Interscholastic Federation San Diego Section wins in cross country, boys water polo, girls flag football and girls volleyball, with notable accomplishments from girls field hockey, boys football, boys football and girls tennis.
Cross country
The school’s boys and girls teams advanced to the CIF State Championships. Season saw course records, such as 14:55.2 3-mile run at the NCC Coastal/Palomar League Cluster #2, set by Kian Massoud (11), and multiple individual champions.
Luka Trevino (10) and Mikayla Wilde (9), two of these individual CIF champions, outperformed their competitors in their individual CIF San Diego Section runs, with Trevino setting a personal record of 17:06.4 in the Division I Boys 2.9 Miles, and Wilde setting a personal record of 19:24.7 in the same event.
Girls field hockey
Varsity girls field hockey finished second in the San Diego Section as well as in the San Diego Division I section, with a first place ranking in the Avocado League, right above the San Marcos Knights and the Canyon Crest Academy Ravens, respectively.
One of the headlining games of the season was against Bishop’s Knights, where the Falcons won the 1-1 tied game after a shootout. Notable assists and shutouts throughout the season cam from team captains Ava Hauer (11) and Kara Dunlop (12).
Boys football
The varsity football team finished with a 4-7 season record and a 1-3 league record, ending the playoffs with a loss to Poway’s Titans. However, some of the team’s featured games took place against La Jolla (43-19), San Pasqual (30-13), Escondido (38-7) and Poway earlier in the season on the Ed Burke field, where the Falcons scored a winning 40-22.
Offensive lineman Corde Keeler (11) reflected on the team’s hard work this season, especially since the Falcons played more competitive teams this season, with high schools such as Cathedral Catholic and Granite Hills fighting the Falcons for the Avocado League Championship title.
“Our plays were strong, and we just kept showing up to practice morning and night, ready to work harder every day, even if that means a couple of losses here and there,” says Keeler.
Head coach Scott Ashby believes that “the team strives to continue progressing during future seasons and will use this past season as a stepping stone to success.”
Girls flag football
The varsity girls flag football season ended with a win in November’s CIF San Diego Section Division I Championship, defeating Westview’s Wolverines 20-13, marking the Falcons’ first Division I title since the recent acquisition of the sport in 2023.
After the team’s two consecutive losses in the championship games over the past two years, Coach Wickman described the team’s win as a “mark on history as Torrey Pines’ first girls flag football championship.”
Several newcomers to girls flag football express that they cannot wait to see where this season takes them and what this means for girls flag football as a whole.
Quarterback Stella Olsen (11), also new to girls flag football, says that she is “more than excited for the future of the new sport.”
“It was the first time since girls’ flag football started [playing], and we had been placing second since CIFs started, so winning first was super exciting,” Olsen said.“This was definitely something new for all of us. We worked hard all season during practices and games, so this was certainly just work that paid off.”
Girls golf
The varsity girls golf team ended their season with the Cardinal team marking a 20-0 win and second-place finish at the CIF state-level tournament as well as the Gold team finishing with a record of 19-2. The Cardinal team, for the sixth consecutive year, upholds its CIF San Diego Section Division title.
Individual players such as Zoe Jiamanukoonkit (12) and Kate Hu (11) set the teams’ goals for the future season and championships.
Girls tennis
Despite the change of the coach at the beginning of the season, the team worked together to maintain their rankings and records.
Leadership and bonding were strong components of the season and playing tough competitors such as the Canyon Crest Academy’s Ravens during an end-of-September match, where the Falcons scored 6-12 against the Ravens.

Girls volleyball
The varsity girls volleyball team won a multitude of league and championship games, as well as the CIF Open Division I Title. They placed third in the state and eighth in the nation with a season record of 38-5. In the CIF Open Division championship against the Cathedral Catholic Dons, the Falcons swept the court, marking a 3-0 win for the team.
The Falcons fell in the second round, after losing four sets to the Mater Dei Monarchs.
Outside Hitter Jaycee Mack (11) mentions how she, and the team are “more than excited” to come back next year and “start the season off just as strongly as the past season ended,” said Mack.
Boys water polo
The varsity boys water polo season concluded with a 17-8 overall record, and a 5-2 league record, placing the team third in the Pacific Coast Division.
Highlights of the season include the triple-overtime “golden goal” victory against the Leigh High School Longhorns. After that, the team defeated the Monterey High School Toreadors, advancing to the championship round in the CIF division.
