The school’s 2025-26 track and field season came to an end, with several races added to the books and a historical team relay record set at the 32nd Annual Falcon Relays.
At the Falcon Relays, the boys varsity 800m Sprint Medley Relay (SMR) team, composed of Cooper Selikow (11), Jet Lair (10), Hudson Bonneau (9) and Nikhil Singh (10), set a Falcon track and field record of 1:40.98, less than a second faster than the last record set in 2024.
The annual Mountain San Antonio College Relays (Mt. SAC), a high school preliminary meet to qualify for the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) playoffs, fell on the same day as prom this year, meaning many upperclassmen were unable to attend. The girls varsity 4x1600m relay, composed of both under and upperclassmen, finished second overall and clocking in a top-10 nationally ranked time.
Sprinter Jake Chontos (11), recounts his third year racing at the Mt. SAC Relays.
“A lot of colleges were there, so it was a little nerve-wracking, but the weather was really nice …,” Chontos said. “Honestly, the only thing I was bummed about was that a lot of people were gone since it was on the day of prom, so a lot of replacements were needed, and the times weren’t as good as they could’ve been. Most of the A-relay was gone.”
The A-relay is typically the fastest relay and the top choice relay team for meets, especially more competitive meets like Mt. SAC and CIFs.
Specializing in the 400-meter dash, Chontos pushed through his exhaustion, trying to make the most out of this meet and make his cuts for CIFs.
“During the race, I ran a sub-50 for my 400, which was pretty solid for me, even despite being sick,” Chontos said.
Varsity girls team captain Sophie Galione (11) reflected positively on this season and the memories she made and will continue to make next year during her senior season.
“The season was definitely a lot more intense and high-pressure this year, especially with me being a junior, but it was super fun,” Galione said. “[There was] a lot of hot afternoon training and long dual meets, but I had a lot of fun with my teammates, and I cannot wait for my final year as a senior.”
CIF playoffs were also an achievement for the Falcons. The girls varsity 4x100m relay team received bronze at the meet, running the fastest time of the year with a 49.21-second race, marking the race as the 6th fastest time recorded within the school’s track and field program history.
Additionally, distance runner Sophia Lesser (12) broke the five-minute mark in her individual 1600m race at the CIF Division I Championships, with a time of 4:59.10, placing second overall at the meet.
Varsity head coach Ryan Bath, who has been coaching the team since 2018 after running track himself at the school, was glad to see the team’s performance this year and all that has been accomplished.
“Some of the major highlights this season were the girls 4×1600 relay breaking the school record at Mt. SAC,” Bath said. “Many of our athletes hit top 10 all-time marks throughout the season, and [many] qualified five relays to the CIF Sectionals meet.”
He believes the team worked hard throughout the season, training “consistently throughout the year to perform at the biggest meets at the end of the season.”
“This season we performed really well at dual meets,” Bath said. “The girls won their fifth straight undefeated league title, and the boys dropped only one meet this year. [There’s] lots to look forward to next year.”
