The Hallway of Lights, an annual tradition that transforms the B Building hallway near the ASB room into a festive winter wonderland, welcomed students back to school last week. The lights are on display from Dec. 2 to 19.
Leadership and ASB classes set up the hallway over five class periods, cutting out snowflakes and hanging lights. Commissioners of ASB-at-large, Stella Phillips (11) and Malia Baldwin (11), are in charge of mapping out the project.
According to ASB advisor and Leadership teacher Jennifer Ryan, the Hallway of Lights is “usually similar,” but “never the same.”
“The lights go out every year, so we have to purchase new lights every year,” Ryan said. “But it’s the same idea that we light up the hallway.”
Handmade paper snowflakes first became part of the hallway decorations last year. ASB decided to continue the tradition this holiday season.
“I don’t pass by [the hallway] that much, but every time I do, it’s nice to see the lights,” Camila Torres (12) said. “It feels festive.”
Dylan Lemke (11) did not know about the hallway prior to this school year.
“I never go through this hallway because I don’t have any classes here,” Lemke said. “I like the snowflakes.”
As a senior, Torres has seen the lights go up for four years.
“[My] sophomore year, there was a big inflatable snowman,” Torres said. “They should bring that back.”
According to Ryan, students used the inflatable snowmen as “punching bags” in the past. As a result, they were removed from the festive landscape.
Like Torres, this is Emmanuel Zhang’s (12) fourth year of seeing the Hallway of Lights.
“[The lights] are a little too linear,” Zhang said. “It would be nice if it was a little more random.”
Ultimately, Zhang believes the lights are a good addition to the school.
Iniya Sivakumar (10) agreed.
“[The Hallway of Lights is] a nice way to add holiday spirit to the campus,” Sivakumar said. “It looks as good as always.”
