The Met Gala took place last Monday in New York City on that famously bold red carpet shown every year on Entertainment Tonight. With new faces and an intriguing “Costume Art” theme, actors, singers and various celebrities took it to the next level on our screens, showing off their chic and diverse interpretations of a clothing-based art style.
From scandalous takes on costume art to costumes “up to interpretation,” celebrities went above and beyond to meet the standards of this year’s gala. Some notable costumes included Lady Gaga’s Brandon Maxwell-designed dress and Teyana Taylor’s extravagant Tom Ford gown.
Given the sheer volume of costumes displayed on the red carpet, Vogue posts an annual Met Gala “Best Dressed” ranking where readers can see Vogue’s selection of the best outfits of the night.
Mia Geringer (11), a fashion enthusiast, frequent Met gala costume “critique” and member of the Torrey Pines Hip Hop dance team, gives her scoop on some of her favorite outfits of the night.
“Paloma Elsesser is my number one because her dress looked like paint and was just absolutely amazing,” said Geringer. “It was simple, it was art and it wasn’t doing too much like other years where celebrities would go way too over-the-top.”
Geringer also commended another look that embodied the artistic theme of the event.
“Sabrina Carpenter is definitely my number two, and she used a film reel from a made-up movie called ‘Sabrina,’” Geringer said. “The dress was the epitome of art, and it was so absolutely stunning.”
Sophie Galione (11), a member of the girls varsity track and field team, also partook in reviewing Met Gala outfits this year, supporting one of her favorite celebrities, Emma Chamberlain.
“I absolutely loved Emma Chamberlain’s [look] not only because she’s one of my favorite YouTubers, but because I feel like her dress was also one of the most unique,” said Galione.
Galione noted that it “was super colorful and funky,” which made it look “different from the rest.”
“A lot of people [were] wearing weird objects, but hers looked casual and comfy, which I loved,” Galione said.
However, some online sources did not have many kind words for this year’s outfits. TikTokers made fun of things like Rachel Zegler’s “weird jaw movements” or Heidi Klum’s eerie Veiled Vestil statue costume, making this year’s Met Gala seem like a disaster.
But the Met Gala is a showcase for fashion, and art is unique, which is why such outgoing and peculiar outfits are put on display. The entire purpose is to normalize and popularize the quirkiness of art as a whole, especially fashion, where the “strange” can be worn.
