The school’s holiday door decorating contest, led by the Associated Student Body, occurred last Monday-Friday. Students displayed their creativity by making winter-themed decorations for their first period teacher’s door. The school’s English 9 Honors, Beginning Journalism teacher and varsity girls field hockey head coach Courtney Kun’s first period won the contest.

Spanish teacher Viviana Alvarado Gomez’s door illuminates the language hallway with its vibrant paper lights colored by her first-period students. Alvarado Gomez had her students adorn the bulbs with holiday messages in Spanish.

English teacher Courtney Kun’s door shows the Grinch disguised as Santa Claus peering out from a fireplace. This design reigned supreme, winning the door decorating contest and the highly coveted donut prize.

Biology teacher MaryAnn Rall’s first-period students demonstrate their desperation for winter vacation through their decorated door. Its principal yeti character was made with cotton balls and an expertly illustrated face.

A googly-eyed penguin covers the surface of the Student Store’s door, its white underbelly decorated with flyers advertising school merchandise. Heather Dugdale also added a Torrey Pines scarf and beanie to keep the animal warm.

Math teacher Josh Mihalinec’s door shows the classic profile of Snoopy resting atop his red house. The house was embellished with paper snowflakes and colorful light bulb garlands by his first-period students.

Biology and marine biology teacher Ryan Eddingfield’s door utilizes an ecosystem-based pun. The door was decorated with many different organisms from that biome.

History teacher Lisa Teller’s door contains a three-dimensional mug of hot cocoa, atop which an array of colorful marshmallows rests. Tellers, like Kun, also included a Grinch disguised as Santa Claus in the chimney below the mug.

An assortment of ornaments decorated with the yearbook portraits of history teacher Lucia Franke’s first-period students embellish a green Christmas tree atop cotton-ball snow. The students displayed their creativity by individually illustrating their ornaments.

Math teacher Kendrick Kuo’s room door is decorated with a vibrant sheet of blue paper, on which two penguins wear scarves for warmth. His students decorated the sky above them with paper snowflakes.
