In an effortless finish on Tuesday night, the girls varsity lacrosse team (6-11) achieved a 20-5 victory against the Poway High School Titans (6-17).
Before the whistle, the Falcons celebrated Senior Night, honoring nine seniors: Addie MacKay (12), Amory Martin (12), Audrey Davidson (12), Charlie O’Connell (12), Ella Wisbach (12), Harper Kelley (12), Idona Riggs (12), Savannah Swanberg (12) and Sydney Stewart.
Heading into the game, the Falcons played with confidence, firing off quick shots while maintaining energetic communication on the field, amplified by enthusiastic cheers from the sidelines and the crowd.
Currently, the Falcons are ranked No. 4 in the Avocado League, with one league match remaining as they push towards CIF playoffs.
Wasting no time, Stewart scored within the first 10 seconds of the opening play to kick off the night.
Team captain and midfielder Davidson reflected on the Falcons’ performance and what led to their success.
“I think our team really came together and we played awesome together,” Davidson said. “I was putting aside all of the enthusiasm from senior night to really focus on the game.”
Davidson described the team’s strategic approach to the match.
“We focused on the little things and the basics to keep the game clean and performing well,” Davidson said.
Defensive player Martin spoke passionately about the group’s energy.
“Our team’s performance was fantastic,” Martin said. “We were all really driven to play our best and get in some cool shots and wanted to play our hearts out by giving some of our players shots that haven’t gotten the chance yet.”
Looking towards the end of her lacrosse career, Martin reflected on her final home game in Ed Burke Stadium.
“The game [was] our last home game,” Martin said. “It means a lot because it is important for the seniors by giving us a moment to look at our past and by giving us constant momentum towards the end of the season.”
One of the game’s most memorable moments came when goalie MacKay stepped up to take a shot — and scored — sparking smiles across the field and a burst of energy from the crowd.
“It was fun to watch Addie score her first-ever goal as a goalie,” defender Kelley said. “In tonight’s game, we really played for each other. It was so amazing to play with all of the seniors.”
Kelley Mettam, girls varsity lacrosse assistant coach, reflected on an emotional and meaningful day for the seniors as they played their final home game of the season.
“Senior [Night] is always a special day because the girls are playing for something bigger than themselves,” Mettam said. “We have a great group of seniors that all of these girls are going to miss tremendously. They are a strong class — athletically and socially — so playing for them was easy.”
Mettam also spoke about the team’s mindset and performance during the game.
“The girls knew we had to win — not only for our seniors, but also for our rankings to secure an Open Division seed,” she said. “Winning was the only option. Our strategy was to play loose, play fast, back each other up, and compete as a team. Once our starters took care of business, we were able to get more players on the field.”
Kelley also reflected on the team’s growth throughout the season.
“We’ve gotten a lot closer together during the season,” Kelley said. “We had a rough start, but we are ready to head into the playoffs.”
