With a slower tempo and an introspective tone “$ome $exy $ongs 4 U” by two famous Canadian artists, Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR is not the usual fast-paced music expected by the artists. The album was announced on Feb. 3 and released on Feb. 14.
As my personal favorite, “CN Tower” shows a lot of familiarity to Drake’s past songs with a new modernized tone. The different sounds compel listeners, feeding our ears in a consistent and easy to listen to pace. I appreciate the song’s melody and will be adding it to my playlist.
A slower paced vibe keeps listeners engaged with its unexpectedness, especially from Drake.
“The new album has a totally different vibe from Drake’s other albums,” Abigail Simon (10), a longtime listener of Drake, said. “It is the perfect music to listen to during a late night drive. ‘SPIDER-MAN SUPERMAN,’ ‘GIMME A HUG,’ and ‘RAINING IN HOUSTON’ are my favorite songs on the album. I found the album to be solid, but not one of my favorite playlists Drake has released.”
While some fans are disappointed by the slower tempo, I feel that the album delivers a beautifully balanced laid back feel, calming and relaxing for listeners. The artists offer their blend of catchy hooks, innovative production and a pensive lens.
Overall, “$ome $exy $ongs 4 U” is a testament to the artistic growth of both Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR. It is a cohesive project that seamlessly blends their individual styles while pushing the boundaries of contemporary R&B and hip-hop. Fans of both artists may find just as much to dislike as appreciate, and the album is sure to attract new listeners. This collaboration showcases some of the best of both artists and could be a strong contender for album of the year.
“The new album grows my connectedness to Drake as an artist,” Nicki Simon (12) said. “Although there was no harsh rap in the playlist, there are definitely a good amount of songs to appreciate. I think this album was experimentational for Drake as he strayed away from the normal music he creates, but there is a lot to appreciate.”
