In the wake of the tragic Los Angeles wildfires, the 67th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday brought artists of various genres together to support the city, garnering $7 million for fire relief through MusiCares . Hosted by comedian Trevor Noah, the event featured numerous performances paying tribute to L.A., including Billie Eilish and FINNEAS’s ethereal performance of “Birds of a Feather,” and Lady Gaga’s hauntingly sorrowful duet with Bruno Mars of “California Dreaming”
The band Dawes, featuring Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith, performed a cover of “I Love L.A.” as a tribute to those who lost their homes in the fires. This stunning and heart-wrenching performance was very personal to the group, as Griffin lost his home, while Taylor lost his home studio, leaving the band with nearly nothing. They performed alongside John Legend, Sheryl Crow, Brad Paisley, Brittany Howard and St. Vincent to deliver an impactful and touching performance.
Billie and FINNEAS’S moving performance also paid homage to LA, Billie wearing a Dodgers hat while she sang and photos of the siblings growing up in the city fading in and out in the background.
Besides heartfelt performances, the night also featured powerful showcases, such as Raye’s performance of “Oscar-Winning Tears.” Accompanied by a full orchestra, her passion and stunning vocals were elevated.
Chappell Roan also delivered an explosive performance, with a vibrant set, imaginative makeup and a cadre of incredible dancers. She sang “Pink Pony Club,” a reference to L.A., where she said she found the courage to be herself. Benson Boone also showed off his acrobatic moves whilst performing “Beautiful Things” with multiple impressive flips, including off a piano, leaving the audience in awe.
Beyond the intricate and breathtaking performance themselves, for many artists, the night made history. Doechii won Best Rap Album for “Alligator Bites Never Heal,” making her the third-ever woman to win the award, after Lauryn Hill and Cardi B. She delivered a heartfelt and impactful speech with her mother, reminding young black girls that anything is possible if they keep being true to themselves. She later performed a medley featuring “Catfish” and “Denial Is a River,” showcasing both her impressive dance moves and phenomenal rap skills.
Alicia Keys also won the Global Impact Award for her influential work over the decades, delivering a powerful speech preaching the importance of diversity to the progression of the music industry. She delivered a message of hope, that diverse voices will continue to rise up, and encouraged people to be empathetic, accepting and kind to one another.
Other artists amassed multiple Grammys, including Beyoncé who took home Best Country Album for “Cowboy Carter.” She also won Best Country Duo/Group Performance for “ll Most Wanted” with Miley Cryus. It was also a big night for Kendrick Lamar, who won Song of The Year, Record of The Year, Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance, and Best Music Video for “Not Like Us.”
The night was also filled with incredible fashion on the red carpet, from Chappell Roan’s artistic, elegant and intricate ballgown to Clairo’s fun and playful polka dot look. Other artists chose to keep it simple: Lainey Wilson’s black suit and pants gave her an elegant and sophisticated look.
In the category of Best Latin Pop Album, Shakira won for “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran,” bringing her children on stage for a speech filled with love and gratitude. She encouraged viewers to be kind to those who are struggling today.
Later in the night, Charli XCX delivered an electrifying performance featuring a mix of tracks from her acclaimed album “Brat,” which was nominated for Best Album of the Year and won Best Dance/Electronic Album and Best Recording Package. Audience members found themselves dancing along to the powerful beats, enthralled by Charlie’s explosive and spirited performance.
A group of L.A. firefighters closed out the night by presenting the final award, Album of The Year to Beyonce for “Cowboy Carter” and received a standing ovation for their bravery in the face of tragedy.
Whether viewers were at home or in the audience, this year’s Grammy Awards showcased the importance of individuals coming together to support one another through times of crisis and heartbreak. The award show not only dazzled with talent, but hope as well, reminding everyone the importance of compassion, empathy and generosity towards others.
