At the age of 5, Tescia Konkol (11) first entered the dance studio after her parents enrolled her in dance classes to expose her to more social opportunities; not knowing that it would spark a passion that would shape her future. As she grew, dance became a major aspect of her life.
“I dance every day at my studio, at home and in dance team practice,” Konkol said. “I enjoy dancing because there is so much freedom that comes with it. One can express their emotions, style or opinions just by doing movement.”
Dance is not just a daily routine for Konkol, but a way to express herself, finding freedom and joy through her movements. Her favorite styles of dance are contemporary and hip-hop because “both are very versatile and can be interpreted together.”
“Dance has been an outlet for me because it has been able to build up my confidence and allow myself to channel emotions that are shown through movement and music,” Konkol said. “In a team, dancing involves everyone’s participation such as energy, coordination and fostering teamwork. Dancing alone allows for individual expression, self-discovery and interpretation.”
In the 12 years that Konkol has danced, she developed her skills and formed lasting friendships that have become an integral part of her journey.
“My favorite memories in dance are the friends I have made since I was just 5 years old,” Konkol said. “I am still friends with a lot of them today, and we always see each other at competitions, and support each other’s teams.”
Konkol has been on the Torrey Pines Dance Team varsity hip-hop team since her freshman year and joined the varsity contemporary team this year. Outside of school she trains at the studio, Devotion the Movement, and is part of the company Hollywood Vibe.
“Dance has impacted my life very positively as I have been able to open up more and have had many opportunities, such as being noticed by college dance teams and certain programs,” Konkol said.
Konkol has a variety of other accomplishments, as an improv champion and solo finalist at the West Coast Elite Dance competition regionals.
“My favorite accomplishments I have made in dance have been making a senior company, winning improv at many high school competitions, and the ability to feel confident in every single room I am in,” Konkol said.
Konkol has major aspirations for her future in dance and hopes to pursue it as a career since it has been a pivotal part of her life. With her passion and determination, she envisions a future where her dedication to dance can be shared on a global stage.
“I could see myself hopefully making it on tour with an artist one day, or be able to choreograph shows such as the Super Bowl and concerts,” Konkol said.
