Sports teams do more than develop athletes; they create connections that cross grade levels and bring students together in unique ways.
Whether on the basketball court or in the dance studio, friendships are formed that go beyond the classroom, strengthening bonds between students of different ages.
For varsity contemporary dancers Anita Bahidi (9) and Shea Fassen (11), their friendship was a highlight of the season.
“I grew up going to the same studio as Shea, and she has been like a big sister to me,” Bahidi said. “She’s taught me so much about technique and how to stay confident during performances.”
Fassen values Bhidi’s enthusiasm and fresh perspective.
“Having younger dancers like Anita on the team is great,” Fassen said. “It’s exciting to watch her grow, and she inspires me to keep pushing myself, too. We’re not just teammates, we’re really good friends, and that makes performing together even more meaningful.”
The same sense of camaraderie is evident on the varsity boys basketball team. Zander Ovies (11) and Assad Brown (12) formed a close bond both on and off the court.
“Assad is kind of like a mentor to me,” Ovies said. “He’s always encouraging me and giving me advice during games. It’s made me a better player and a better teammate.”
For Brown, mentoring younger players is one of the most rewarding parts of being a senior.
“Zander’s talented,” Brown said. “Being able to pass down what I’ve learned over the years is something I feel great about. Plus, we have a lot of fun together — we’re always messing around at practice.”
These cross-grade friendships are a testament to the unifying power of sports.
“On the court, it doesn’t matter what grade you’re in,” Brown said. “We’re all here to win and support each other, and that relationship carries on outside of practice.”
Bhidi echoed that sentiment, reflecting on her experience with the dance team.
“It’s really cool to have friends in different grades,” Bhidi said. “They’ve helped me adjust to high school, and made me feel super welcomed to the team when I first joined.”
As competitive sport seasons arise, the bonds between students like Bahidi, Fassen, Ovies and Brown will play a key role in their success. Their connections highlight how sports unite individuals, demonstrating that teamwork and friendship transcend age.
“When athletes from different grades support each other, it creates a different type of bond,” athletic trainer Zayna Green said. “These friendships make teams stronger because everyone feels valued, and that leads to better collaboration on and off the field.”
