Angela Guerrero joined the school’s administration team as the new Assistant Principal starting Oct. 1, following the promotion of Tracy Olander to the SDUHSD office.
With hard work and great intelligence, Guerrero’s role is slightly different than that of Olander’s; however, she will still oversee the Multilingual Learner Program, Advancement Via Independent Determination, Special Education program and safety for the campus.
She received her undergraduate degree in English literature at San Diego State University, her doctorate at the University of California, San Diego in education and equity for leadership. She then attended High Tech High Graduate School of Education. Guerrero previously worked at High Tech High School as a humanities teacher, continuing at Logan Memorial High School for two years and most recently at Hoover High School for two months.
With an extensive educational background and a strong dedication to student success, Guerrero brings a special blend of classroom expertise and leadership to her new role.
“My biggest goal is to spend time getting to know the campus better,” Guerrero said. “I want to learn about the resources our school provides.”
Guerrero is eager to know the school “like the back of her hand” as she plans on learning more about classes, clubs and the resources available throughout the school. She “wants to assist students in having a great school experience.”
In order to benefit this educational community, she plans on increasing communication between teachers, students and parents as one of her urgent goals.
“I want everyone to feel like they have a voice and I plan on stopping by every class to talk with teachers and chit-chat with students in the hallway,” Guerrero said.
Guerrero praised the school’s strong sense of community and the potential she sees in the student body.
“There is something truly special about this school,” Guerrero said. “I read so much about what Torrey Pines offers and how it is such a robust program.”
With a focus on an inclusive school community, Guerrero wants to connect students, staff and community members together.
“I come into every learning space with an intense focus on equity and ensuring that all students and community members are getting what they need and what they deserve to be successful,” Guerrero said. “Fostering a positive school culture comes from me walking around the halls, smiling and talking to kids to figure out who they are.”
