Inside the Performing Arts Center, the dim lights reflect off of Alyssa Yeh (10) as she takes in a few steady breaths before starting her performance.
Yeh, a varsity contemporary and hip hop dancer, was recently named the November Artist of the Month, a recognition that highlights her dedication and passion for dance. Yeh’s journey in dance began when her mother signed her up for classes at age 3.
“I got started dancing as my mom just signed me up for some classes since she always wanted to dance when she was a child,” Yeh said. “What made me fall in love with it was the friends and family I made along the way.”
Yeh’s favorite style of dance is contemporary, as she has been on Torrey Pines Dance Team since her freshman year, learning in the shadows of the upperclassmen.
“What I enjoy the most about performing is being able to connect the dance back to my emotions,” Yeh said.
Despite her successes, Yeh faces challenges, particularly with self-confidence. Yeh showcased persistence throughout her dance career, not letting any obstacles stop her performance.
“I’ve overcome [challenges] by being self-reassured and not comparing myself to others as much,” Yeh said.
For Yeh, preparation is key in optimizing her routines.
“I like to have a long warm-up, making sure that I’m fully stretched, ” Yeh said. “I also like to listen to the music that I will be performing that night to zone in.”
Yeh has a strong motivation to keep dancing as she continuously enjoys new and unique dances she participates in.
“I think the most recent piece I’m the most proud of is my solo from my studio [Fusion Dance Solana Beach] last year,” Yeh said.
Balancing her rigorous dance schedule with school work requires discipline, and Yeh makes it a point not to slack off by managing her time effectively to handle both responsibilities.
“I really try not to procrastinate my school work, especially with my packed schedule when it comes to the TPDT contemporary and hip hop practices as well as my studio rehearsals, and I make sure that I don’t force myself to do anything that I don’t think I can handle,” Yeh said.
Looking ahead, Yeh has aspirations beyond her dance career.
“I love being on the dance team right now,” Yeh said. “But in the future, I don’t think I will pursue dance as I hope to be a pediatrician like my grandpa.”
Yeh also offers advice to those who face struggles while dancing.
“Even though personally I want to go into the health department, I would advise other dancers to never give up, even throughout the lowest times because trust me, it will get better,” Yeh said.
Yeh’s story is one of perseverance, passion, and balancing dreams with practical goals, making her a fitting recipient of the Artist of the Month title.
“This award means a lot,” Yeh said. “I’m thankful that dancers are starting to get recognition. It also means a lot as I spend a lot of my time dancing and I’m glad that people appreciate it.”
